Spoilsport SMS reveals 'Ghajini' climax

New Delhi, Dec 22(IANS) Just when the audiences started queuing up for booking their tickets for Aamir Khan-starrer 'Ghajini', a chain SMS started playing spoilsport by revealing what could possibly be the climax of the film.

'Someone killed Aamir's girlfriend and he lost his memory. Then he tries to find out the killer. Suspense… Aamir himself is the killer. Now enjoy 'Ghajini'!' says the SMS that has been doing the rounds on the mobile phones for the past few days.

Whether the SMS is true would only be clear once the film releases Friday. However, several people have received this SMS through known as well as unknown sources.

Says 22-year-old Surbhi Pant: 'I received this SMS a few days back. I was very irritated after reading it because I wanted to watch the film. Now I don't know if it is true or not. Just in case this is the story of the film, I would be really disappointed, as I know the plot now. Eventually, I thought I should forward it to all my friends.'

The film is the much-hyped Hindi remake of director A.R. Murugadoss' Tamil hit with the same name.

While the original 'Ghajini' featured southern actor Surya Sivakumar along with actress Asin Thottumkal, Murugadoss cast Aamir to play the main lead in the Hindi version and repeats Asin in female lead.

'Ghajini' is the love story of a rich businessman Sanjay Singhania (Aamir) and a model Kalpana (Asin). The story takes a U-turn when Kalpana is murdered and Sanjay suffers temporary amnesia due to a brain injury. Sanjay's character sets out to take revenge from those responsible for Kalpana's death.

While in the Tamil version of 'Ghajini', Sanjay finds the murderer and completes his revenge by killing him; the ending has been altered in the Hindi version.

Amitabh Bachchan is No 1, says Aamir Khan

New Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS) Amid the war of words between the three Khans - Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman - the 'Ghajini' star Aamir has declared that it is none other than superstar Amitabh Bachchan who is still the number one in Bollywood.

'For me Amitabh Bachchan is No 1. Do Lata Mangeshkar, Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan say they are number one? No one who sits on the top needs to say he is number one. Others keep claiming to be there,' said Aamir.

Recently, Shah Rukh sparked a controversy by proclaiming himself the biggest brand and saying there cannot be any competition with him.

Commenting on that Aamir said: 'I don't believe in competitions with others. I only compete with myself.'

After a phase of cold war with his contemporary Shah Rukh, Aamir says he can't dare to fight with him.

'Do you think I could dare to fight with Shah Rukh. He is a good friend and so I can't fight with him. I respect him a lot,' said Aamir, who was in capital over the weekend to promote his forthcoming film 'Ghajini'.

The actor, who was is town giving his fans the 'Ghajini' cut at an event, was in a jovial mood but tried his best to avoid queries about his cold war with Shah Rukh.

He joked that by turning into a barber for a day, he was even promoting Shah Rukh's next venture 'Billo Barber'.

His antics did not just end at that.

Aamir's forthcoming ventures is titled 'Three Idiots' and the actor said the title should be rightfully given to the three Khans of Bollywood - including himself, Shah Rukh and Salman.

'My forthcoming film after 'Ghajini' is Rajkumar Hirani's 'Three Idiots' and I play the character of an idiot with R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. But I think Shah Rukh, Salman and I are truly the three idiots of Bollywood,' Aamir said.

He also cast a dig at Salman when he asked the crowd whether they want him to flaunt his body that he has toned up especially for 'Ghajini'.

'Who wants to see my eight packs?' he asked. But when there was a loud 'Yes, we want to' from the audience, Aamir said: 'Only Salman can show his packs. I can't do it. It's not my cup of tea.'

'De Dhana Dhan' cast ill after shooting underwater

Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) The entire cast of director Priyadarshan's forthcoming comedy 'De Dhana Dhan' had been shooting non-stop underwater at Film City here for two weeks and most of them are unwell.

'Though the water is clean, it isn't exactly the aqua-blue swimming pool water. And it's taking its toll on all of us. We're coughing, huffing and wheezing,' said a member of the cast on condition of anonymity.

Katrina Kaif, who left the shooting for two days to be in Singapore, rejoined the unit recently. She has been down with a severe cold and cough for a fortnight now and has been on antibiotics.

Suniel Shetty, who is cast opposite Sameera Reddy in the film, admits the cast has been shooting underwater for two weeks.

'But the water is clean. It's been disinfected every day. Priyan is very clear about that. But it isn't easy. I mean I love the water and swimming. But this is tough. These underwater sequences being shot at Film City are supposed to be part of the sequences in Singapore. We'll be shooting the rest of the sequences there,' Suniel told IANS.

Added another cast member: 'Though it is very difficult being underwater for hours, we have a lot of fun. It's Priyan's film and nobody questions his vision, but we could do with a break.'

Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) After the success of 'A Wednesday', Naseeruddin Shah, 58, and Anupam Kher, 54, are flooded with offers for films highlighting the adventures of the fifty-plus brigade.

While the former isn't biting the bait, Anupam is making hay while the sun shines.

'I keep telling Naseer we're the new rock stars of Bollywood,' joked Anupam. I'm so happy that 'A Wednesday' has made such an impact,' Anupam told IANS.

'I'm at this very moment shooting for 'Carry On, Pandu' with Om Puri. Om and I earlier did a remake of 'Victoria 203' with us playing Ashok Kumar and Pran's parts. I think it should've come after 'A Wednesday'. 'Pandu' is being directed by very well-known Marathi director Chandrakant Kulkarni,' he added.

Hindi filmmakers are planning several films with the two new 'rock stars', including a sequel to 'A Wednesday'

Scripted the next Bollywood hit? Now wait for a contact

Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) 'I'm very busy now', 'Call me after three years' or 'Who are your references?' - these are some of the common replies that budding scriptwriters get from filmmakers when they attempt to gain an entry into Bollywood.

Those looking for a launch platform accuse producers and directors of double standards when they complain about the dearth of new talent.

'They say one thing in public and say something else when we approach them. They are no better than politicians,' Rajesh Kumar, a budding scriptwriter, told IANS.

Kumar said he had approached various directors, but none of them even agreed to listen to his script's synopsis.

At a recent conference organised by the Screenwriters' Association and attended by many wannabe writers, one of the main topics for discussion was the dearth of good writers and original scripts. But many delegates who attended the conference complained that the biggies who spoke of originality and providing a platform to newcomers, were not open to giving fresh talent a chance.

The meet was attended by established directors, producers and writers including Kamal Haasan, Govind Nihalani, Rajkumar Hirani, Abbas Tyrewala, Amol Palekar and Sriram Raghavan.

When this IANS correspondent pretended to be a writer and approached directors at the meet with a script, there was not a single positive response. Some of the replies were:

Tyrewala: 'Oh! not now. I was looking for scripts some time back, but now I have 22 scripts and there is no chance of getting something more for at least a couple of years.'

Bharadwaj: 'I'm very busy with my film now. So please call me at my office some time after February.'

Hirani: 'I can't think of anything beyond my film 'Three Idiots'. Once I'm through with my film, I can give you time. Call my office after two-three months.'

Sanjay Gadhvi: 'I am not doing anything now. But I have my scripts. So I don't think there is a fair chance. We entertain new writers if there is some sort of reference. It's very difficult to entertain one and all and so if there is any writer who comes with a reference we take him seriously.'

Palekar: 'I am so busy with my work that I cannot look right or left for at least three years. Please call me after three years.'

Prathamesh Sharma, who has just started his career in scriptwriting and has written a few short plays, got similar replies from filmmakers.

'It's very difficult to make them hear our concepts and ideas as they don't know us personally. I have tried to explain my concept to them, but they cite different excuses and avoid me.'

Pradtyoth Pandit had the same experience.

'I have many original ideas and concepts, which I am confident they will like if they listen. But I don't know how to make them listen,' Pandit said.

'They always ask me to e-mail my concept, which I did several times, but there was no response from their end. I'm really frustrated by their double standards,' he added.

Abhijaat Joshi, who writes for Raj Kumar Hirani, suggested at the conference: 'The best way to make an entry for a budding writer is to take part in contests which provide a decent platform.'

But one of the delegates dismissed his suggestion. 'I have participated in several contests and won a few too. But nothing really happened. It's all about the contacts one has in the industry,' he remarked.

Don't miss Neenyaare

Neenyaare comes as a breath of fresh air at a time when the Kannada film industry is facing a serious dearth of good films. Though it was released with no publicity and little expectation, Neenyaare is a fast-paced love story with good dialogue, brilliant photography and excellent musical composition.

Sure, there are some loopholes in the plot; but kudos to debutant director Sindesh for demostrating the ability to weave an interesting narrative, complete with exciting, unexpected twists and turns.

In fact, the film has numerous tantalising moments, coming one after the after, that will leave you at the edge of your seat throughout. But where it really shines is in the second half, when the film truly takes off, moves at a rapid pace and ends with a well crafted climax.

It's important to mention the impressive performances of Sambhrama and Ramya Barna. Because they're both debutants, their strong acting abilities will surely surprise the audience.

As for the director, Sindesh, he's done very well for himself here. The dialogue is crisp, commecial elements are effortlessly introduced and the two songs are well timed and well shot.

Cinematographer Vishnuvardhan and music director V Manohar have done their respected parts to enhance the quality of the film. V Manohar, in his hundredth film as a music director, delivers another admirable performance and certainly does not disappoint. In particular, his treatment of the lyrics is downright jawdropping .

To come to the story, Surya, an orphan, is looked after by a good hearted couple. Megha, the daughter of the couple, quarrels with Surya all the time. But, when Surya saves her from a huge embarrassment, Megha changes her ways.

Meanwhile, Surya is in search of Sinchana, who sends him messages constantly. She in fact plays hide and seek with him. What happens to Sinchana is revealed in the climax.

Suraj, who had earlier acted as a hero in the unforgettable Shivani, proves his mettle once more. The two heroines have also performed very well. Sharath Babu, Thulasi Shivamani and many young artists have added strength to the film. In fact, the whole cast contributes.

Watch Neenyaare for its novel presentation, fantastic visuals, good music and fine performances.

Forget everything... even the 'inspired' tag

All those expecting Ghajini to be a take on Memento better keep their hopes in check.

Sure, the first publicity stills from the film show [Images] channeling both some over-steroided WWE wrestler as well as the hero from Christopher Nolan's fantastic 2000 thriller. The similarities are too obvious -- clues and leads tattooed across the body, polaroids of hints captured before memory flits away -- and even if Khan is bulked up like a human growth hormone advertisement, the makers of the upcoming release admit that he suffers from short term memory loss in a way pretty much identical to the anterograde amnesia showcased in Memento.

Yet going in expecting a fresh, nouveau-Bollywood spin on one of the most groundbreaking thrillers in years would be asking for... not too much, but too predictable a product. And Ghajini's [Images] setting itself to offer you a whole different brand of masala.

People are now able to put a name to my face

Bringing up the rear of a long line of journalists interviewing a celebrity is always tough. The person is tired, and are on auto-pilot by then. The answers more often than not tend to sound rehearsed and repetitive.

But south Indian star Asin Thottumkal, who will be making her debut opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini, is only too enthusiastic to chat. Grace and elegance personified, Asin talks at length about her new film, Aamir Khan, and rumours of bad blood with Jiah Khan.

Aamir turns barber for a day

Aamir Khan adopted a new way to promote his film, Ghajini [Images]. He put up a pair of scissors and gave some fans a haircut, similar to his own Ghajini cut.

The actor set up a barber shop in Bengali Market, New Delhi [Images], on Sunday, and tried an alternate career for a few hours.

Earlier, Big Cinema's employees flaunted Ghajini hairstyles, which is steadily becoming a craze among youngsters.

Aamir's Ghajini look has been designed by his loyal hairstylist Avan Contractor.

Rajni's look revealed in Endhiran

Shankar's movies always make news. More so, if it stars Tamil superstar Rajnikant. Even today, people talk about the hype their earlier film together, Sivaji, created. Shankar was to direct Robot next, with Shah Rukh Khan. To be made in Hindi by his production house, the film was officially announced as well. But creative differences made them fall apart.

Hit Song of 2008

Kabhi kabhi Aditi, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

My gift is my song and this one's for you? Look who has done Elton John proud! Our very own Abbas Tyrewala. The Aditis of the world owe the writer-turned-director a big one for this glorious gift of a song. Bring on a super-endearing picturisation of the same on bouncy younglings -- Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza. Without any question, A R Rahman's young, animated cheer-up ditty, sung spiritedly by Rashid Ali, is full of beans and spunky beat.
In fact, the entire soundtrack is more than happy to rest on the strength of Rahman's feel-good concoctions and left-footed Pappus.
